Structures Response 6-Sean OBrien

The Intifada is very interesting. I think that in a region that is so volatile, tensions between the Palestinians and the Israelis are even more tense which does not seem possible. Ever since the UN carved up the region back in the 40's and the eventual war in 67. The Palestinians initial response was the PLO. However the PLO, at least in the publics view was considered ineffective and was also secular. So the Intifada was just the Palestinians responding to the situation. I think that it was quite interesting to see that the PLO was the First group to develop.
The Intifadas most long lasting achievement was its ability to make the World, as well as Israel itself think about what it was doing. There were over 50 groups that arose during the occupation. There were a substantial amount of Israelis who did not agree with what was going on. The fact, that even, the Israeli military(even though it was not widespread or popularity) was questioning its involvement is quite remarkable. Even to a point where military recruits were jailed for their unwillingness to be deployed to the gaza strip. There was all of this going towards the Palestinians cause. The golf war changed this however and feelings ultimately changed to those of Israel. Led by the US Diplomacy and the signing of the accords did harm to Palestine. The Palestine's are one the largest if not the largest displaced population in the world. Their freedoms are severely limited and even to the point where the are not allowed out of their villages. Constant checkpoints harass them, so my feelings is that Palestine was basically screwed over. So I think that it would of had a longer and far reaching been for the west and by definition the west's interference in the Israeli Palestinian affairs.
